Rule #1: Make the first book the most universally enjoyable trope possible from your list of ideas.

Rule #2: Make the books all similar lengths. Growing in length is fine, see Harry Potter, but jerking back to a short novel after a robust full-length start is a reader disappointment waiting to happen.

Rule #3: When it comes to your next series after this one, make it the same, but better.
